Things are still kicking over here at TCR. I’ve just been busy lately with a plethora of other projects.

My latest venture is starting a new hip hop column for the Nashville Cream (which is pretty much for the Nashville Scene what Noisey is to Vice lol). It’s called Numbah 4,080. Peep it and educate thyselfs.

Honestly, if you’ve ever liked anything you’ve seen over here, you should also keep up with Public Garage Sale and Unruly Factions. I swear there’s something in the air. Exciting things are happening.

TheCreativeRoutine will pick up again shortly.

The Photo Game

I recently went on a photo excursion with my homegirl Julia Bee to an abandoned slaughterhouse in the middle of the industrial part of town. The day included some precarious climbing and an abundance of cobwebs and mud puddles. It was well worth it though. Hope you enjoy these photos.

Be sure to keep up with the tag, The Photo Game, on Public Garage Sale for more photos from the day.

A #VERYRARE Vintage Lookbook

I recently got together with my homie Jonah to shoot the lookbook for a new vintage line he’s launching, literally out of his closet. Over the years, Jonah has built a considerable, and impressive, collection of one-of-a-kind, vintage merchandise. Sports items, denim jackets, collector’s pieces, and various other goods.

Our shoot was pretty impromptu, styled from the mass of clothes on his couch, and shot in his backyard.

As of right now, the vintage line is still unnamed, and there’s no website. All of that, and much more, is still to come. I know this though; I was growing tired of sitting on all these glorious photos and felt the need to share this goodness with the masses.

Stay tuned for more. And keep up with the tag on Public Garage Sale for more photos from our lookbook.

A Conversation with TORRES

Mackenzie Scott has had a pretty good year so far. Last month she released her self-titled debut album under the moniker TORRES. And so far the response has been phenomenal. The Fader, NME, BBC Radio, Paste, and Paper, among others, have all written about TORRES. Pitchfork even gave her album an 8.1, along with a “Best New Music” tag.

TORRES is the best album of 2013 so far, in my opinion. It’s a unique body of work unlike anything you’ve likely ever heard. It’s austere, tragic, intimate, and completely novel. Her voice is full of character, and her musical formula is refreshingly simple. There’s no real climax to the album, and her songs lack any conventional structure. Everything just sort of happens, from the first track to the last.

Raw vocals, brilliant lyrics, true emotion, and an electric guitar. That’s TORRES’ entire recipe.

I recently linked up with Mackenzie for a photo shoot. We also took a minute to discuss her art, her new record, and her personal style. I’ve been a big fan of her sense of style for some time now, so I was eager to see what connection, if any, that it had with her music.

First off, congratulations on your debut album! The response has been overwhelming positive. Are you surprised at all by how enthusiastic everyone has been about your record?

Thank you so much. I am overwhelmingly flattered and grateful. I’m elated to know the record is striking some sort of a nerve with people.

How long has this album been in the making? And how long did it take to record?

Technically, you could say this album has been in the making for four years, as I began to write the material for the record in 2009. The recording process lasted all of five days, which was quick, albeit exhausting.

Your music is defined by its simplicity. The minimalism goes hand-in-hand with your lyrics. Was that a deliberate move when recording, or was it more a result of working with the resources that were available?

This is a funny topic. I graduated from Belmont University recently, so I suppose you could say I had ample opportunity to go a more slick, polished route, recording and production-wise. My decision to track to tape was as deliberate as the songwriting itself, and the major reason my engineer/producer Ryan McFadden and I chose to record at Tony Joe White’s home studio in Franklin. He had the analog resources that are not so readily available at your typical Nashville recording studio. It almost felt like I was running away from all the polish for which Music Row has become known. Maybe I was.

Do you do any writing outside of music? Because your songwriting is incredible.

Thank you. I do, actually. I write a lot of poetry and short stories, and have been doing so since I can remember. Those were the formats that originally inspired my love affair with words; songwriting didn’t come until later. I think I was halfway through high school before I wrote my first song.

Your music is deeply existential, and rather melancholic at times. Do you try to stay in one area thematically, or do you just say what comes to you?

The themes portrayed in my songs are merely concise, linear versions of what I only wish I could convey in everyday conversation. It’s my medium of communication; if I didn’t have it, I would explode or rot or something. I never “try” to write anything anymore. I did that for such a long time and would constantly beat myself up over it when I failed. Ultimately, the result is horrible when I try to say something that I don’t mean. I hate when I listen to artists sing about things I know they don’t care about. If you don’t care, chances are others aren’t going to care either.

Is it all autobiographical?

Whether it is or not, it’s all relevant to the universal human experience.

Why play with an electric guitar instead of an acoustic?

I have more fun. It’s more diverse. It screams in my hands.

It’s hard to pinpoint your style musically, but you remind me of those early folk heroes. You have this raw, intimate voice and an idiosyncratic sound. Everything seems like your personality. Who/what are your musical influences?

Johnny Cash, Joan Jett, Nirvana, Fleetwood Mac, The Rolling Stones, Tori Amos, Brandi Carlile, St. Vincent, Imogen Heap, and Ryan Adams are just a handful of bands/artists who have influenced me at one point or another. There are a lot more that I’m probably blanking on right now.

How do your musical style relate to your fashion sense? I see a little of Johnny Cash, both in your music and your fashion sense. Is that intentional?

I suppose they’re correlated somehow. I wear what makes me feel good. Johnny is one of my heroes, and he’s certainly influenced me in all aspects, musically, fashionably, and otherwise. Fashion isn’t necessarily something that appeals to me, though, at least not in the way that it’s been portrayed in America. I think it can be beautiful and is a really fantastic medium of expression, but consumerism kind of bums me out and ruins the fun a bit.

How does Nashville influence your sound? There’re so many different scenes and so many different sounds here.

I’m not actually sure Nashville has influenced my sound a great deal. There are a couple of bands here that I’ve certainly taken cues from in terms of showmanship, but the influences on the music itself come from a myriad of places and span an impossibly wide variety of genres and eras.

What’s next for you musically?

I wish I knew! I’m going on a tiny tour in the next couple of weeks here, so that’s a start. Humble beginnings.

Any music videos in the works? I’m dying to see some visuals for “Honey” haha.

Nothing as of right now, but it’s probably safe to say there’ll be a video of some sorts in the near future.

STYLE PROFILE: BECCA CAPERS

You don’t really seem interested in fashion or trends. It seems like you really just dress for yourself, and that’s refreshing. When did you first get interested into style?

I guess I was always really into dressing myself. When I was younger, I went through phases (my all-white phase, saddle oxfords phase, baggy layers phase), but I think it became a bigger deal when I had to wear a uniform in middle school and high school, and I only had casual days to flaunt my identity. Now I just sort of treat myself as a paper doll for all kinds of outfits.

It seems like there are a lot of one-of-a-kind pieces in your wardrobe. Where do you get most of your clothes from? Do you ever alter or make your own items?

I shop mostly in free piles, old people’s closets, and—duh—second hand stores. I do love mending, altering, and embellishing my clothes with needle and thread. Sewing machines still intimidate me, though, so besides some knit hats and scarves, I usually don’t construct whole pieces.

image

You’re a bit on an adventurer, cross-country “on the road” trips and such. Has that had any influence on the way you dress?

In ways, yeah. It has cultivated my love of finding that one outfit I can wear for several consecutive days. Also, back to the paper doll thing, it makes me think of clothing by circumstance. As in, “this is an everyday outfit” or “this outfit can stand a lot of mess and roughing around” or “this is an outfit I can wear to pass as normal”.

What’s your process for getting dressed in the morning?

My clothes are never very tidily kept. So I tend to grab things at the top of the pile or drawer—things that I always wear. If I know I want to look good for a particular occasion, I sometimes lie out clothes the night before. Or I think about it while I’m in the shower.

Are there any people whose style you especially admire?

Little girls and boys. Anyone under the age of 10 normally dresses better than I do. And old ladies. And, oh my god, old men! And PepperAnn.

image

Any blogs, fashion or otherwise, that you regularly read?

Not really regularly, but I do like the Sartorialist. And Tavi Gevinson’s blog, thestylerookie.com. People just got it goin’ on.

Most stylish movie you’ve ever seen?

This sweet documentary about old ladies who still got it, called Advanced Style. Also, um, Zardoz.

Local Honey Fall Fashion Show - So Alternative

Nashville fashion house, Local Honey, recently had their 3rd annual fall fashion show, with in-house menswear brand Tidwell and Perryman debuting their looks for this season - a combination of curated and altered vintage items all found in-house. The show was also the debut of the Balee Collection, curated womenswear courtesy of Balee Greer. I had the privilege of being in attendance for the show, which featured looks inspired by “90’s grunge”. It was a clever, nostalgic, tongue-in-cheek ode to America that didn’t have to rely on ever-so-trendy aesthetic of “Americana” in order to get its point across. It’s great to see a Southern fashion house not falling on that same crutch, but rather pushing completely in its own direction. Kudos to Local Honey and Tidwell and Perryman for putting together a brilliant, creative show.

image

90’s fashion may have been the inspiration for this fall’s show, but the collections had a decidedly streetwear ethos, particularly the menswear. Prints and graphics were in full effect - camo of every variety, plaid, floral patterns, and a multitude of other themes. Both collections were full of cultural allusions and other iconic imagery. Everything from sports teams to colleges to Sesame Street to The Simpsons to Garth Brooks, seemingly nothing American was untouched. The semi-ironic tinge permeated the entire show and kind of reminded me of a Japanese take on American iconography.

image

Granted one could name current Japanese fashion as an inspiration for the show (conscious or not). With the heavy influence Asian sensibilities are having on fashion, particularly streetwear, and with Asia’s history of American-inspired aesthetics, much of fashion can now be seen as a reinterpretation of Asia’s reinterpretation of Western aesthetics.

There was a certain thoughtful balance that both collections were able to maintain throughout. Streetwear meets menswear/womenswear. Progressive and en vogue, yet decidedly vintage. Creative, yet fully functional. Seeing dresses successfully paired with beanies was quite impressive, and it actually seemed like the women’s looks featured just as much, if not more, headwear than the men’s.

image

image

If you live around town or ever find yourself here, be sure to visit Local Honey. They’re definitely a house that’s on to something special. I can’t wait to see what’s next for the good folks at Tidwell and Perryman as well. Word on the street is that they’re in the process of opening a new location. Be sure to keep your ears to the ground for more info on that.

To see more of my favorite looks and shots from the show, check me out at my other site, Public Garage Sale. Search the “Local Honey So Alternative” tag for all the visuals I post from the show. Keep up with it over the next couple of days. You won’t be disappointed, trust me.

What’s Been Good With Me Lately - NEW GIG

If you been hanging out with me on my new blog, you’ll know that I’m still outchea being outchea. If you only keep up with TheCreativeRoutine, you may think that I’ve been mad incognito lately. In either case, here’s an update on my most recent antics.

I recently joined the staff of Native Magazine, a new Nashville culture mag that launched a few months ago. With all the hype that Nashville has been getting recently from the rest of the country and other countries, Native couldn’t have arrived at a better time.

I’ve been helping them out with fashion stuff, photography, writing and the like. I did some modeling for the first issue, in a summer lookbook for Savant Vintage Couture. It’s a rad clothing store in the 12South neighborhood, and I pretty much styled myself with everything I wanted to buy from there lol. If you’re ever around the neighborhood, be sure to check it out!

image

Native Office @Moonbase

I’m excited to see all awesomeness Native conjures up in the future and stoked to be a part of the team.

Be sure to check out the latest issue, September. There’s a cover story on Marc Scibilia, as well as features on Blackfoot Gypsies, Springwater, and more.

Howdy guys,

It’s been awhile hasn’t it? A lot of people over the last few months have asked me what happened to TheCreativeRoutine, and if I was planning on forsaking it for good. The answer, of course, is no. I just needed a break from blogging, so I took one (4 months to be exact). Of course, 4 months in the blogosphere is an eternity. So it’s nice to know that people cared enough to keep tabs on me, and that new people have started caring since (shout out to all my new followers!).

I didn’t just go into hibernation for the last four months either. If you remember my old banner, you’ll recall that I’ve been pretty busy lately. Not just with music, but also with modeling (more on that in the future), making new friends, and opening a new blog.

Public Garage Sale is my new space to do all the things I haven’t been able to do on TheCreativeRoutine these past two years. More frequent, shorter format posting. More of my art and photography. More of my friends’ art and other cool shit from the culture.

You know. Pretty much bridging the gap and solving the whole Internet-Body problem. Public Garage Sale is a place for me to document the culture from my unique lens while involving those around me. That’s why it’s called Public Garage Sale eh?

Feel free to submit, reblog, disseminate. You know, all the fun stuff.

And keep your eyes peeled for more from TheCreativeRoutine.

I’m back.

What I Wore Today: A Photo Series

The influence I’ve gained from Asian fashion is becoming pretty noticeable in my daily uniform. I’ve started to drift towards looser fits, more flowing silhouettes, and more camo over the last few months. It’s been pretty cool to watch myself progress stylistically, even during the midst of this project. Presented below are the final four shoots of the WIWT project.

If you’ve noticed, the collaging got more and more experimental as I went on. It was definitely a lot of fun, and I may have a spring/summer version of this when the weather gets warm. Feel free to share your thoughts.

What I Wore Today: A Photo Series

“What I Wore Today” shots have become as ubiquitous with fashion blogging as the word “menswear” has with the hashtag. It’s become a thing that virtually everybody does, whether on Tumblr or Instagram. One of the most frustrating things about having a Tumblr page that isn’t a micro-blog is that I only post every so often, and something like WIWT shots really have no place on my blog. I realize that I don't post outfit pics nearly as often as I’d like to, so I asked myself what I could do to feature WIWT shots in an unconventional way, while still keeping in line with TheCreativeRoutine. The answer that I came up with? A photo collage.

For nearly a month now, I’ve been meeting on a regular basis with my friend Diana Liu, who you may recall from past TCR posts. Every few days, we’d get together and document whatever it was that I happened to be wearing that day. Over that time, I’ve compiled a collection of outfit visuals that I collaged together to come up with the series you see here. We captured too much too much goodness for one spread, so I decided to split up this series into two posts.

I was spurred to undertake this project because I realized that I had begun forming a uniform. After noticing patterns in my dress, I decided to document my style evolution as it happened. Looking back, I’ve noticed that my closet has become a collection of blacks, grays, blues, greens, earth tones, and camo. Lots of camo (you’ll get it more in Part II).
