Modern Prep
I’m not entirely sure how many people dispute me whenever I make this statement, but the amount of influence that prep is having in the modern menswear and womenswear sphere is unreal. The return to classic style and silhouettes, and increased emphasis on fit, that is being embraced widespread is resulting in clothing that is becoming more and more prep and ivy inspired.
It seems like we’re sort of all adopting it too, self-professed preps and otherwise. Look at the pant legs of your favorite #menswear bloggeur. It’s probably cuffed. And check out his feet. If the photo was taken between March and October, he probably isn’t wearing socks either. Some of these prep-originating trends are becoming so infused in the general culture that we often forget where they came from or that things haven’t always been this way.
Documenting the growth and evolution of modern prep, and prep influenced clothing, is especially fascinating on college campuses. Most of all at a school like Vanderbilt, a southern ivy that has been a bastion of prep and ivy culture for decades. It’s cool to see the way that preps interprete preppy style vs. how non-preps incorporate certain elements of the culture into their style template.

You likely remember Alex. I featured him on the site not too long ago. He’s back for a second go, with a look that’s just so effortlessly captivating. It’s preppy no doubt, but with a particular European tinge. Interestingly enough, Alex’s prep style is pretty traditional American prep, especially relative to the rest of preps our age. So it threw me for a slight loop when I noticed that his ensemble seemed uncharacteristically Milanese. The hacking tweed blazer juxtaposed against the polka dot, silk scarf and burgundy leather gloves just screamed Milan. And sure enough, I was unsurprised to learn that the chinos were milano chinos from Brooks Brothers. It’s amazing how one can take an outfit, almost entirely composed of Brooks Brothers, and wear it in an Italian way. In the age of the internet, where regional style genres know no boundaries, it seems like the amount of style mashups of different prep sub-sects, and other genres, is only going to increase in number.

Say hello to Tori. This is her first of what I’m sure will be multiple appearances on TCR. In many ways Tori is a stellar example of the way preppydom is permeating overall fashion culture. I asked her if she considered herself a prep. Because while her outfits aren’t always this outright ivy, she does manage to infuse a fair amount of preppy customs and trends into her aesthetic. Her reply? “Definitely not.”
I think my style is a constant battle between my college prep education and my fringe culture “un-education”…I spent seven years at prep school, so I was definitely influenced…but I would rather die than wear some Lilly Pulitzer confection. I’d describe my closet as a boxing match between Joan Jett and a gypsy, refereed by Audrey Hepburn.
The amazing thing about prep and ivy style is the way in which people have not hesitated to pick and choose the specific particular elements of the aesthetic they like, discarding or defiantly going against that which they find less agreeable. Isn’t that the way that McNairy built his own brand of irreverent neo-prep, or the manner in which Street Etiquette developed their particular urban, afro-prep aesthetic? You don’t even have to “like” prepdom to be influenced by it.
Tori’s outfit reveals one more interesting dynamic: the constant tug and pull between general prepdom and college prep. Although prepdom began with the Ivy League style of the 1950’s, enough time has passed for general prep, college prep, and the college Greek aesthetic to become three distinct entities. Still though, the Greek system’s roots in traditional prep and ivy league style are apparent, as evidenced by how seamlessly a sorority-issued rugby can be infused into a preppy ensemble.

I do believe I’m growing an obsession with flare pants. Perhaps it’s all the All the Pretty Birds that I’ve been reading, but there’s just something so elegant and feminine about them. As brilliant as flare pants are, it’s amazing you don’t see women rocking them in the streets more often. All the reason more though for me to stop Hannah for an impromptu photo shoot when I saw her wearing these teal or turquoise (or whatever color these are) flare jeans.
There’s no better way to elongate a female figure than a pair of flare pants. Bonus points if they’re high-waisted. Hannah’s aren’t. But the striking color is more than enough to give off a feminine air of sophistication, elegance, and carefree-ness. The perfect attitude for the summer months. Ah the youth!

But the real brilliance is in the amazing way she accessories. A wise man once said that accessories are a necessity. (A quick Google search will show that said man has said this on several occasions, but you do emphasize important things right?)

Her accessories serve as a great complement for her flare jeans, tying the entire outfit together. The consistent gold-colored theme of her jewelry works great with her skin, as well as with her top. The watch, the necklace, the rings. Even her purse has gold-colored patterning on it. It’s this kind of thoughtfulness and attention to detail that can really make an outfit. I must say, out of all of her accessories, my favorites are the deer head necklace and the ring from Gorjana. It’s just not often you see pieces like those.

Overall, this is a pretty great outfit for summer frolicking. There’s a lot of tips to be taken from this for anyone looking to find the perfect look for this summer. Bright and complementary colors, smart use of accessories, and a general youthful exuberance will rule the day.

Cheers!

As promised a few weeks ago, I present to you: Michael Yarbrough, one of the funniest people I know.

the infamous michael yarbrough smirk
It’s not often you meet a guy who simply embodies effortless cool, whose every move is unbelievably suave and silky. Michael is not one of those guys. He’s a huge nerd, in fact. But Michael embodies something just as valuable as effortless cool. He exudes a certain quirky charm and wise wit that will leave you in a permanent half-smile if you spend more than a minute around him.

michael’s color palette complements life
When I look back at these visuals of Michael that I captured a few weeks ago, I sort of marvel. I hadn’t planned on shooting Yarbrough that day. I actually just ran into him while I was meeting up with another friend. Amazingly though, everything about Michael’s look just clicked. He just happened to be carrying a yellow mug that perfectly complemented the grass and his cool sweater and jeans. I suppose the stars just aligned. It was one of those moments where while you’re snapping away, you’re aware that everything you’re capturing is pure gold. It’s a cool thing to be cool with a guy whose color palette complements life.

classic blue sweater, blue belt, blue jeans

coffee mug and belt
When I complimented Yarbrough on looking particularly steezy that day, he bemoaned that I had caught him on a bad day. According to him, he just sort of rolled out of bed.

michael’s sneakers; he does gardening in these
As proof for his claim of “not trying” that day, he pointed to his jeans and sneakers, proclaiming “I do gardening in these!”
“Sure,” I replied. “Whatever you say, Michael. Whatever you say.”

OOAA:W/J+L+C: Favorite Unreleased Material
If you are a photographer, it is an unavoidable fact that only perhaps 10-15% of the finished photographs you take will ever be shown to the general public (I completely made up that number, but it seems pretty accurate). For me, this has always been one of my biggest frustrations with the discipline. It always seems like I have a wealth of quality, unreleased material I’m sitting on. This is exactly the case for the Out on an Adventure: With Josh + Laura + Cal collection. While the collection contains seven released photo series, the material I’ve been able to show over the past few months only really begins to scratch the surface of the nearly 600 finished photographs that I have. I’ve literally found myself, at times, itching to find a reason to just drop more photos that I really like. So I went back and scoured the archives. The result? Ten of my favorite unreleased OOAA:W/J+L+C visuals for your aesthetic enjoyment. If the impulse strikes me again, I may release more in the future. I may even go back, revisit the collection, and create some sort of artistic reinterpretation of OOAA:W/J+L+C. I’m contemplating it. I suppose we’ll see. But for now, this will have to do.

Memories of a Warmer Time
It was not too long ago that news outlets were reporting that 49 out of 50 states in the U.S. were currently experiencing snowfall. Yes. That’s the kind of winter we’ve had. It’s been the kind of winter that has left everyone not residing in the state of Florida pining for and reminiscing about spring and summertime, a time where there’s no fear of being snowed in or attacked by harsh winds upon every endeavor outside.
And I suppose it’s for all of the above reasons that I created this spread. Sometimes you see images that evoke a certain emotion in you. Well these photos stir up a nostalgic longing for summer. They remind me that life won’t always be this way. There will come a day when 3 layers of clothing won’t be a prerequisite for stepping outside. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and that light is the sun.
This is part 1 of Memories of a Warmer Time. This is a simple ode to warmer weather.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and that light is the sun.
This is part 1 of Memories of a Warmer Time. This is a simple ode to warmer weather.

Folks, I’d like to introduce you to a friend of mine, who goes by the name of Michael Romeo (yes that’s his real name). He’s unquestionably one of the biggest dandies I’ve ever come across, with a penchant for the flamboyant. Still though, he manages to pull off everything he dons with a certain amount of class and grace. One of the most amazing things about style is how individual it can be. And there are few people I know that embody this idea as much as Michael. We got together not too long ago and produced some beautiful images. Just a quirky photographer and his quirky subject. Nothing more. Nothing less.
If you ever come across anyone else that can don a fur coat, dark-wash denim, and cowboy boots all at once without looking gimmicky, be sure to send me a picture. It’s not an easy thing to do.

I met up with Marc James, a friend and British import, recently for what is perhaps the most spur-of-moment photo shoot I’ve had to date. Walking around our university’s idyllic campus, to and fro during the school day, Marc and I happened to run into each other as we were both headed to class. We said our greetings and went on our way, but I couldn’t happen to notice the sharp contrast his green, puffy Moncler jacket and bright orange backpack had when matched together. I sent him a couple texts and we shot a few visuals later that day.
Sometimes it’s the simple things in life, and style, that make all the difference. A green, smooth jacket, a matte, orange bag, some classic jeans, kicks, and a plaid shirt are all fairly simple articles in of themselves. But when coupled together in the manner done here, the results can be striking. All that’s required is a little thought and instinctiveness to create a timeless, yet modern look.

*The following is a continuation of an interview I recently had with photographer Rog Walker:
Itoro Udoko: Yeah. It’s amazing to note how success just comes with authenticity. That’s why I think what we’re involved in right now, in the culture, it’s like history in the making. This is the stuff people will be talking about in 25 years, this grassroots movement. It’s moving away from corporations run by 60 year-olds. They’re coming to us now. For advice. For collaborations.
Rog Walker: You said something that was interesting about corporations. I was talking to a designer in London about that. I used to try to get internships and stuff like that, really build myself up from a ground level. But now, it’s all grassroots. I have guys like GQ and stuff that are coming to me. We really have to utilize it and stay true to ourselves. It’s pretty cool.
IU: What about the guys over at the Madbury Club? For me, the most memorable project that I’ve seen of yours has definitely been Asphalt Warriors. That was dope on so many levels. How did you become introduced to Phil and the others?
RW: Ha. When I look at my Rolodex, I’m like, “Wow! These people are amazing. How do I know them?” I was involved with Culture of Creativity. I’d just shot Vashtie, who by the way, is the sweetest girl ever. Then Phil, he just contacted me. He’s like, “I need you to shoot this.” He tells me, “Look. All we have are shoes.” So I scouted the area. I tell him, “We should shoot here. We should do this.” We just talk through the concept and ideas. And we made it happen. Of everyone I’ve shot with, aside from Josh and Trav, Phil and I are the coolest. We have a couple of things coming out that are amazing. He’s just a cool dude.

meech simms (from asphalt warriors), rog walker, 2010
IU: A couple of things coming out? Can I get any details on that? A TheCreativeRoutine exclusive haha?
RW: No. Not at all. I never ever give any details. Haha. It’s gonna be amazing though. I might leak it to you a couple of weeks before it drops.

phillip t. annand, rog walker, 2010
IU: You can leak it to me whenever (chuckles). I’m always all ears.
RW: I can tell you this though. I’m working with Ne-Yo, the singer. We’re launching something towards the end of this month. His company contacted us over at Culture of Creativity and said we should pick up their new media venture. So we’re doing the web and content aspect of it. Pretty cool. It’s called CompoundTV. I may be going some places with Ne-Yo on his tour: Indonesia, parts of his European tour. Japan. Perhaps doing shoots and stuff. But CJ Something will be with Ne-Yo the entire time, going everywhere with him.
IU: That should be dope. It’ll be interesting to see what you guys cook up.
RW: Yeah. Claude Kelly, I’m also working with. He is the most amazing songwriter. This not an opinion. It’s a fact. He’s written for Michael Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston. We’re working on really building something that highlights our era in music. Something dynamic, amazing. Getting back to the core. When you look at music now, it’s so commercial. It used to be mainstream, but now it’s really commercial. Industries started to capitalize on that mainstream success and made it too commercial. But yeah. Claude Kelly: amazing, amazing talent.

rog walker and just c, by suhaly b., 2010
IU: What about Levi Maestro? Any plans to do something with him? You know what would be really awesome? A Maestro Knows x Street Etiquette x Madbury Club collaboration. The people would love it.
RW: Um. Maybe. He’s like all the way over there (in Los Angeles). We should have done something already. But it hasn’t happened yet. But hopefully we can get something done. We’ll see.

IU: A couple of things coming out? Can I get any details on that? A TheCreativeRoutine exclusive haha?

RW: No. Not at all. I never ever give any details. Haha. It’s gonna be amazing though. I might leak it to you a couple of weeks before it drops.
