Wholly Aware: My Thoughts and Inspirations
My creation of Wholly Aware is the direct result of three different artistic influences - the poetry of Gil Scott-Heron, Adrien Sauvage’s This is Not a Suit, and the 1980’s independent, New York art film Downtown 81.
Gil Scott-Heron
I’ve often told people that my poetry took a radical change when I started writing it to be heard instead of read. Gil Scott-Heron, with his debut album Small Talk on 125th and Lenox, is man that inspired this change.

gil scott-heron
Most people know of Gil-Scott Heron from the vocals he lent to Kanye West’s latest album on Who Will Survive in America. But in true hipster fashion, I was listening to Scott-Heron before My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy came out. Released in 1970, Small Talk on 125th is one of those dynamic works of art that has the power to change the way you perceive a certain medium; that’s certainly what it did for me. Gil Scott-Heron’s rich voice is set to poems of youthful rage and passion, presented with the wisdom of an old sage. His unique sound works as the perfect vehicle for delivering these tokens of sincerity.
Wholly Aware is one of the first poems I wrote after I changed my writing style. On top of this, Scott-Heron inspired me to pay attention to the feel of my voice when I made the short film version. Simply put, without Gil Scott-Heron’s Small Talk on 125th and Lenox, there would be no Wholly Aware, poem or film.
Adrien Sauvage’s This is Not a Suit
This is Not a Suit has been a favorite of mine for some time now. I posted about it back in October. It’s a surrealist and minimalist piece that delves into the idea of the “creative designer,” all while serving as Adrien Sauvage’s debut lookbook for his eponymous line.

adrien sauvage
The narrator’s voice and tone for the short film is what I looked to when trying to figure out how I wanted mine to sound in Wholly Aware. I was also influenced by the way that This is Not a Suit attempted to delve into the creative process of the mind.
Downtown 81
Or New York Beat Movie, as it is sometimes called, is 72 minutes of pure artistic energy. The film chronicles the hip New York downtown scene of 1980-81 from the eyes of rising artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Essentially, it’s a loosely fictionalized, youthful and romantic portrayal of Basquiat’s early New York life and the people around him: Fab Five Freddy, Glenn O’Brien, Maripol, and tons of other iconic figures.

jean-michel basquiat as samo
Downtown 81 was dubbed over due to the fact that the original sound was lost. The incongruous audio gave the movie a dated and nostalgic feel. It inspired me to do the same with the audio in Wholly Aware. I was also originally going to put the film in black and white, but the vibrant color in Downtown 81 convinced me to do otherwise. The edited color treatment in my short film was directly inspired by this.
Amazingly, on the surface Wholly Aware may not deeply resemble any of the three influences I cited as inspirations. But that’s the way creativity works I suppose, “the spectacular fail” that the Blue Scholars talked about.
I felt the need create this post because I wish that artists explicitly talked about their thought processes and influences more often. My thoughts are that surely I can’t be the only one that feels this way. If nothing else, this post should serve as a way to better understand Wholly Aware, for those who wish to. For all who have yet to see it, or would like re-watch it, it can be viewed here.

My Newest Short Film: “Wholly Aware”

Although I’ve done it before, I’m always unsure of how to present these sorts of things. Whenever I create and release a film, I feel the desire to explain my thought process behind the concepts I was trying to explore, and the inspirations behind the piece. It’s finding the best way to convey all of this that always stumps me. There’s so much I can say about this film.

For those of you that have been following TheCreativeRoutine since the early days, you may recall the Blue Scholars interview I posted back in October. They cover several topics in the video, but what I want to focus on is their thoughts on imitation, influence, and creativity…particularly their thoughts on the concept “the spectacular fail.” The “spectacular fail” is what the Blue Scholars deem to be the original creation that occurs when creativity is combined with influence and inspiration. They talk about this especially in regards to film, which is why I bring it up. You can fast forward to about 2:40 to watch it, although I recommend watching the entire video if you have time. But I digress, back to my film.

Wholly Aware is ultimately an art piece about the process of inspired creation, “the art of making art.” I considered going into more depth on my thought process and inspirations right now, but that many paragraphs in one post is a bit much lol. So I’ll save it for a later post. Besides, I’d rather you all watch the film before delving deeper into my thoughts behind it.

But I shall say no more! Here it is: Wholly Aware. Please don’t hesitate to respond with any thoughts or questions, positive or negative.

Cheers folks.

The Making of “Wholly Aware”, Part 3

Being a photographer, any time you place a camera in my hand and give me interesting subjects…I give in to the urge to photograph them. The filming of Wholly Aware was no different. Rachel and Will obliged me, in between helping me film and sitting there, respectively. Much appreciated guys. Two of my favorite redheads.

I must include a pic of Rachel’s shoes. They were so full of character!

so classy, yes?

And finally, just because I can…

oh Will…

I believe what I just did is referred to in the industry as a “photo dump”. Wholly Aware is coming Monday.

The Making of “Wholly Aware”, Continued…

Making this film was terrific fun. Up to that point, it was definitely the most forethought and planning I’d put into any piece I’d ever shot. The result was me getting to boss around my “crew” and shout out instructions (by crew I mean mainly Rachel and Andre. Like I said…Will really just sat there.)

don’t give me that look Will. you know i’m being honest.

case in point: he even moved to go sit in a different spot.

Here are some visuals of the filming.

camera angles being tested…on me!

more test shots

nick telling will how bad my original idea was. will smiling smugly in agreement.

will takes a break from sitting

One of the coolest parts of the entire filming process was getting to dub over the sound. It was cool for several reasons. One: the boom mic made us feel fancy. Two: Will actually did something.

you feel fancy too just looking at it don’t you?

more dubbing

another test shot

More to come soon. Wholly Aware drops next week.

The Making of Wholly Aware, My Newest Short Film
Believe it or not, the time is finally here. After several allusions and at least 2 direct references, I’m finally getting around to dropping my latest short film. The reason why I’ve delayed it for so long is fairly simple. I just never got around to creating the content necessary to accompany the film. Lame excuse right? Well…better delayed than never.
I suppose step one is taking you through the making of the film right? Walk with me then.
It’s always fun to have cool friends that are willing to help you shoot a short film. (Although, conveniently none of them are anywhere to be found when it’s time to edit.) It’s great to have buddies that are willing to help you bounce around ideas, inform you of when said ideas suck (thanks a lot Nick), serve as your models (Andre and Rachel), camerawoman (Rachel), and emotional support (Will). At this point in time, many of you are surely wondering why I’m giving the names of people you haven’t been introduced to. Fret not! Allow me to introduce the crew:

the human, test-shot guinea pig. he’s the live model i tested most of the camera’s angles on.

the viciously, unabashed and unbiased critic. the term “truth hurts” was invented for people like him.

the beautiful, do-it-all. the camerawoman that pulled it all together. i also tested shots on her when i got tired of looking at andre.

and will…he spent most of the time being trapped in this box and just sitting there. oh yeah! he helped dub sound too.
I suppose it’s appropriate to include the “star” of the film too.

More on the making of Wholly Aware coming in the future. The short film will be dropping early next week. In the meantime, you can watch any of the other 3 films I’ve released to date online at my Vimeo page.
Cheers.

“Do The Right Thing” - Movie Profile

If you’ve followed TheCreativeRoutine for more than a few days now, you’ve likely noticed that I’ve changed my background. If you’re cultured (joking), you might be aware of the fact that my new wallpaper is a screenshot of the Spike Lee joint Do the Right Thing. If you had no idea and were indeed wondering from where this glorious image hailed…fear not. I got your back. Prepare to be educated.

the image in question. a screenshot of spike lee (who plays mookie) and joie lee (his sister in the movie…and real life).

As a lover of New York City, 1980’s culture, and hip hop, I naturally jumped at the prospect of watching Do the Right Thing. I’m also a big fan of Spike Lee (How could you not be? He’s so steezy.) On a scale of 1 to 10: concerning how good of a move it was for me to watch this movie, I’d have to say an 11. You know a movie set a decade before your birth, in a city you’ve never visited is winning when it can make you feel nostalgic.

Do the Right Thing is a movie about the events of a hot summer day in a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. It starts off as a light-hearted and charming flick, chock full of cultural references and memorable characters. The movie takes a turn though, chronicling trivial events that fester racial tension, eventually leading to the death of one of the neighborhood’s residents. Ultimately, Spike Lee presents a very provocative look at racial and cultural differences in New York City.

There are so many appealing elements in this film (aside from the plot). As a photographer and experimental filmmaker, the first thing that caught my eye was the dazzling cinematography. Ever since I started dabbling in filmmaking, I’ve really become aware of how much photography and film are merely extensions of each other. Spike Lee clearly gets this; the camera work and use of color is impressive.

still of mookie in front of a wall.

ruby dee and ossie davis play mother sister and da mayor, respectively.

Another impressive thing is the cast list. So many big names are in this film. Spike Lee, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, John Turturro, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, Rosie Perez (who made her film debut), Martin Lawrence, and countless others. The insanely talented cast makes for a quite captivating list of characters. There are names like Mookie, Da Mayor, Mother Sister, Buggin’ Out, Radio Raheem, Sweet Dick Willie, and Señor Love Daddy (That’s Samuel L. Jackson. Thought I’d point that out. You didn’t know it before. But I bet you just realized you’ve always wanted to watch a movie where Samuel L. Jackson plays a character named Señor Love Daddy haven’t you? Yeah. I figured you’d think that.).

I’d be remiss to go without naming my favorite character though. Jade, Mookie’s sister. She’s played by the lovely, talented Joie Lee. I do believe the term “movie crush” was invented for people like her.

joie lee as jade.

I know what you’re thinking. Absolutely gorgeous, right? I agree. The amazing thing is that since she’s Spike Lee’s sister in real life, there was obvious chemistry between the two. Everything seemed so natural, so her role worked great. It’s a shame that she hasn’t been in too many movies and never became a household name. I’m making it a point to watch all the movies both of the Lees have been involved in. Clearly their family is just a talented, attractive bunch, emphasis on the attractive.

We’ve all seen those lists of “Top 100 Movies to See Before You Die”. I’m not sure who conjures up those sorts of thing, but they’d be ill-advised to leave this movie off. It has all of the right ingredients for a great movie. Thought-provoking storyline, award-winning cast, captivating subject matter, and stellar cinematography. Anyone who’s ever seen the movie always wonders aloud, “Did Mookie do the right thing?” If you’re one of those people, let me know your thoughts.

Now it’s your turn to do the right thing. Go watch this movie. (You saw that coming didn’t you?)

Rachel
I do believe that this is one of my favorite portraits that I’ve ever taken. It’s a head shot of my friend Rachel, a girl with personality and intellect as vibrant as her hair, eyes, and lipstick. The photo was taken a few weeks ago during the filming of my most recent film. What was originally intended as a test shot ended up becoming a stunning portrait. I suppose that’s what happens when you have friends this attractive.
*I realize that I keep talking about this film, but I’m yet to actually debut it on my blog. Soon. Very soon. Haha. Very, very soon.

What I’ve Been Working on Lately
It’s been exactly a week since I last posted any content. I know, I’ve been counting the days too haha. I’m 99% certain that this is the longest hiatus in TheCreativeRoutine’s history, and I must say…I have felt guilty for neglecting my duties as of late. But no worries, I shall make it up to you guys. After all, I haven’t just been sitting around and learning the fundamentals of cooking from Lil’ B this entire time. I’ve been chilling with my homegirl Rebecca Black too.
In all seriousness though, in the little free time that school has allotted me, I’ve been keeping myself busy. I recently completed a short film and am currently in the intense process of editing another. (Picture long nights of isolation in the studio with A Tribe Called Quest, Gil Scott-Heron, and other hip hop classics on continuous repeat). Yeah that’s been my life these past few days haha. It’ll all be worth it in the end though.
The above photos are an amalgamation of a few shoots I recently had, film stills from my recently completed short film, and stills from the one I’m currently working on. I won’t reveal anymore. It’ll be worth the wait, trust me.
Last but not least, I’d like to say hello to all my followers: the ones that have been with me for quite some time now and all of the new ones I’ve obtained in my seven day absence (I’ve actually gained an unusual amount of followers this past week. Where did you all come from? lol Perhaps I should just stop posting all together, and see if the rate of growth continues). Exciting times are ahead! I’m glad you’ve joined me for the journey.
Cheers!

Cheers!

Abstractions in Time and Space

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you my latest short film - Abstractions in Time and Space.

In many ways, this is a departure from anything I’ve done in the past: a completely abstracted ten and a half minute study of light and color. However, in many ways it’s in the same vein as my older work. In my photography and film, I’ve always concerned myself with the way light, color, and contrast play in my work. Having the opportunity to devote an entire piece to that concept was quite intriguing.

It’s amazing: looking at contemporary film, everything is so narrative driven. In my work in the past I’ve always tried to stray from heavy narrative. Looking back historically, some of the greatest, most influential, art films - especially the avant-garde work created by the Dadaists in the 1930s and ’40s - were completely void of narrative. A lot of the early experimental work by Man Ray concerned itself with aesthetics - the visual composition of film. This makes sense. After all, if a narrative rich film doesn’t have spectacular composition to fall back on…it’ll fall flat on its face.

Perhaps I’ll do a post on some Dadaist experimental film in the near future. But for now, you have this to appreciate - the conceptual descendant of early 20th century avant-garde film. I hope you enjoy. Be sure to drop me any comments, questions, or feedback.
