Thoughts on My Year-End, Top 10 Images List

If you keep scrolling down you’ll see it: my year-end list of 10 of the most memorable images that defined this blog from last year. As I went back at looked at the images I compiled, it came as no surprise that multiple photos are part of the Out on an Adventure: With Josh + Laura + Cal collection: the one from Laura Brokaw’s style profile, and the image promoting the release of the OOAA:W/J+L+C short film. OOAA:W/J+L+C is one of my more recent projects, but some of the images I selected date further back.

There’s Candace’s Scene&Heard photo shoot, one of the earliest projects I did. Also from Scene&Heard, at the fashion show’s after party was Calla. There’s also the Asian Carp Invasion collection. As well as the crowd favorite yellow laundromat post. There’s the timeless Hillsboro Village collection, and also the brilliant night photography collection. And last but not least my photo shoot with Scott and Katie, which dates back farther than anything I featured on the list.

I can’t wait to see what’ll be on 2011’s year end list.

Cheers.

Street Photography - Hillsboro Village (Black and White)
It’s amazing the effect that black and white can have on a photograph. Make an image black and white and the mood instantly changes. The message conveyed perhaps becomes different; it’s that powerful.
The peculiar thing about black and white photography is that the focus isn’t necessarily the subject itself. When there’s no color to distract the viewer, the importance of things like composition, texture, color, use of negative space, and lighting becomes extremely amplified. It’s often these things that make or break a black and white body of work.

Self Reflection
It’s always interesting to see what I look like when I’m taking photographs. So whenever I see mirror or a window and I’m holding a camera, I take a picture of myself.

Street Photography - Fine Folks of Hillsboro Village
The experience of street photography can never appropriately be encapsulated if the fine folks that inhabit said streets aren’t showcased as well. I had quite a bit of fun stopping strangers that I deemed to have an interesting aesthetic and asking to photograph them. Overall, only one denied me. Although, the homeless man in the first three images asked me to photograph him after I regretfully informed him I had no money to give him.
It was amazing how flattered most people were when I stopped them to ask for the photograph. The man with the awesome tattoos? I think I may have made his day.
The adventure culminated with a chance meeting with some friends and some memorable frozen yogurt. All in all, a fruitful day.

Street Photography - Hillsboro Village
Street photography, as an art form, has always been intriguing to me. I’ve had the urge for quite some time now (thanks, in part, to folks like 13th Witness and the Sartorialist) to just wander the streets, with a camera in hand, and take in all the sights and sounds.
I recently did just that in Hillsboro Village, one of Nashville’s more notable neighborhoods (and home to local musicians Ben Folds and Mat Kearney). I did my best to capture the visuals I saw, and convey them through still, 2-D images. It was, without doubt, some of the most fun I’ve had with a camera in some time.
