My Disposable Summer
I find it amazing how much of experimental filmmaking was born as a result of the particular equipment, or rather lack of equipment, being used to create works. The nature of resources available for creating film has such a keen ability to dictate the kind of art created, resulting in numerous film movements and philosophies whose key traits and characteristics are significantly based around the kind of tools being used for creation.
Photography is the same way, where the aesthetic produced by different materials start to become artistic statements in of themselves. The kids over at Street Etiquette dropped some progressive fashion photography not too long ago (via Cleon Grey, of Aveder Outfit fame), shooting a post with disposable cameras on the motorcycle jacket, along with heavyweights Ali of A Noble Savage, Ouiji of The Brooklyn Circus, and Kadeem of KJohn La Soul.
I recently had a chance to have my own fun with disposables as well, over the summer. Without access to my typical camera equipment, I was forced to improvise new ways to document my summer. It was amazing, living in a resort town where 75% of the people in the area at any given time were tourists. Seemingly rows upon rows of semi-vacant, identical $35-a-night motels were juxtaposed with beautiful mountains and creeks. I did my best to capture what I saw around me.

With disposable cameras, you often don’t know what you’re getting. The settings are out of your control, and the results are often as unpredictable as Johnny Weir’s wardrobe. But things really start to get interesting when you start getting liberal with digital editing of your disposable images.

I got in a pretty experimental mood when I was editing these images, trying different approaches that would have likely never occurred to me had I not been editing disposables. Even fully conscious of how much the medium was dictating the way I approached the editing process, I was still unable to go about it in any other way.

The results were great though. I’m really happy with the way things turned out. In the age of super DSLRs and 5Ds that can shoot entire feature-length films and street style blog presentations at the same time, analog photography is oft quickly forgotten. It’s nice to know that there are certain things technological advancement can’t quite replace, the raw aesthetic of a particular medium.

The Days of My Youth
I see ahead of me,as far as the eye can see,for miles ahead, nothing but possibilities.I see the sun beating down on the pavement.Heat sizzling from the ground, then rising to the sky, like romance and adventures, being born of the earth.I see the day waiting to be had,and time waiting to be conquered.Memories are waiting to be made, memories of adventure and sweet serendipity.Even in what is to come, I am nostalgic.Even as the yellow yoke in the skybeats down on the ground,it evokes in me feelings of anticipation parallel to those long gone. And it’s these sediments of those former sentimentsthat grant me an assurance fully cementedthat the events of today will be no differentthan the events of days past.So in this, I thank God for the days of my youth! These days of discovery, romance, and joy. These days. These days.May these days long remain with me.
This is my ode to the joy of summer and a life of novel spontaneity. Live young while you’re still young. Fill your life with adventure, for no else will do it for you.

The Days of My Youth

I see ahead of me,
as far as the eye can see,
for miles ahead, nothing but possibilities.

I see the sun beating down on the pavement.
Heat sizzling from the ground,
then rising to the sky,
like romance and adventures,
being born of the earth.

I see the day waiting to be had,
and time waiting to be conquered.
Memories are waiting to be made,
memories of adventure and sweet serendipity.
Even in what is to come, I am nostalgic.

Even as the yellow yoke in the sky
beats down on the ground,
it evokes in me feelings of anticipation
parallel to those long gone.

And it’s these sediments of those former sentiments
that grant me an assurance fully cemented
that the events of today will be no different
than the events of days past.

So in this, I thank God for the days of my youth!
These days of discovery, romance, and joy.
These days. These days.
May these days long remain with me.

This is my ode to the joy of summer and a life of novel spontaneity. Live young while you’re still young. Fill your life with adventure, for no else will do it for you.

I do believe I’m growing an obsession with flare pants. Perhaps it’s all the All the Pretty Birds that I’ve been reading, but there’s just something so elegant and feminine about them. As brilliant as flare pants are, it’s amazing you don’t see women rocking them in the streets more often. All the reason more though for me to stop Hannah for an impromptu photo shoot when I saw her wearing these teal or turquoise (or whatever color these are) flare jeans.
There’s no better way to elongate a female figure than a pair of flare pants. Bonus points if they’re high-waisted. Hannah’s aren’t. But the striking color is more than enough to give off a feminine air of sophistication, elegance, and carefree-ness. The perfect attitude for the summer months. Ah the youth!

But the real brilliance is in the amazing way she accessories. A wise man once said that accessories are a necessity. (A quick Google search will show that said man has said this on several occasions, but you do emphasize important things right?)

Her accessories serve as a great complement for her flare jeans, tying the entire outfit together. The consistent gold-colored theme of her jewelry works great with her skin, as well as with her top. The watch, the necklace, the rings. Even her purse has gold-colored patterning on it. It’s this kind of thoughtfulness and attention to detail that can really make an outfit. I must say, out of all of her accessories, my favorites are the deer head necklace and the ring from Gorjana. It’s just not often you see pieces like those.

Overall, this is a pretty great outfit for summer frolicking. There’s a lot of tips to be taken from this for anyone looking to find the perfect look for this summer. Bright and complementary colors, smart use of accessories, and a general youthful exuberance will rule the day.

Cheers!

TheCreativeRoutine’s Official Summer Reading List: The 40+ Books That I Hope to Devour This Summer Vacation
College life is always quite frustrating for an avid reader. On the one hand, there’s always a surplus of reading to be done. But that’s precisely the problem. The majority of reading collegiate life presents us with is that which we’d rather not be doing. The concept of leisure reading dies with school.
That’s why God invented summer right? If there’s anything positive that primary and secondary education did for me, it was instilling in me the idea of summer reading. Not that I ever did the reading I was assigned over the summer. But the idea of summer reading inspired me to read texts of my own choice, that suited my personal interested.
The following is by far the most extensive summer reading list I’ve ever compiled. By no means do I expect to finish every book on the list. But I do hope to read as many as possible. Perhaps at the end of summer I’ll post the same image, with giant X’s over the books I managed to devour.
Here it is. My summer reading list for this summer. A few of these books I’ve read before, most I have not.

Overall, this is an extensive collection of philosophical works, literary classics, science fiction, and some magic realism. Much thanks to the homie Gaws for recommending several of the book on this list. You can find his summer recommendations here.

Spent

It’s 3 am.
My blanket beckons to me.
My pillow whispers my name.
My bed’s patience is running thin.

We’re all restless and impatient
because of the last 3 hours I’ve spent,
in breathless anticipation for the moment
I feel spent.

The moment I can justifiably climb into my abode,
where all is still. The castle at the bottom of a hill.
The moment I can comfortably reside in my
ephemeral estate, located in my dream land.

Guiltless rest, residing in
the arena of unconscious imminence.
The feeling that the only thing
I currently feel is my mind,
slipping down that hill.

*I’ve still been burning the midnight oil as of late. But later today, I embark upon an adventure…my last final exam of freshman year. Very soon I will have no excuse for maintaining terrible sleeping habits and not working out. I won’t be in class.

Summer has nearly arrived. Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff are visibly excited.

Memories of a Warmer Time (Part Deux)
The best photography places you at the scene of the crime, so to speak. As in, it tries help you experience what the photographer was experiencing when the images where captured and when they’re looked back upon. Hopefully that’s what I’ve done here. A reminder of sunnier times. A reminder of how glorious things can be when the sun graces us with its presence. The colors are dripping with the sentiments of springtime and summer.
It won’t be soon before long.

Memories of a Warmer Time
It was not too long ago that news outlets were reporting that 49 out of 50 states in the U.S. were currently experiencing snowfall. Yes. That’s the kind of winter we’ve had. It’s been the kind of winter that has left everyone not residing in the state of Florida pining for and reminiscing about spring and summertime, a time where there’s no fear of being snowed in or attacked by harsh winds upon every endeavor outside.
And I suppose it’s for all of the above reasons that I created this spread. Sometimes you see images that evoke a certain emotion in you. Well these photos stir up a nostalgic longing for summer. They remind me that life won’t always be this way. There will come a day when 3 layers of clothing won’t be a prerequisite for stepping outside. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and that light is the sun.
This is part 1 of Memories of a Warmer Time. This is a simple ode to warmer weather.
